Third Sector Workin’

I hope you’re all doing well in 2017 thus far! Since I managed to totally play the system (a mixture of flexi-time, annual leave and working 4 days a week) I’m not going back to work until Tuesday, because I just love having loads of time off during the festive season – it’s my very favourite time of year and while I’m obviously sad it’s over, I’m actually sort-of looking forward to getting back into everything! So (without completely giving it away) I thought I’d tell you a bit about what I do and what it means to me.

I work in the Third Sector (charities/community organisations and those seeking to do a bit of good!) in Glasgow and I absolutely love it. I first started working in the sector in 2015, after my graduate job turned out to be a bit of a dead end and wasn’t really giving me job satisfaction any more. I applied for LOTS AND LOTS of jobs (gawd, sooo many) before I got my first TS job and I see now that “what’s fur ye” really doesn’t go by you if it’s meant to be. That said, I’m not someone who leaves anything to fate because that would be silly, if you want something then you have to go out and get it instead of sitting waiting for it to happen, but looking back on disappointments in my life I see now that they have all led me here, and I’m definitely happy where I am now!

When I first started working in the Third Sector it was *such* a massive difference from the corporate world of medical device marketing I’d been involved in previously. Where my old boss took great pride in his Porsche, my new boss took great pride in her campervan, and because people aren’t money-orientated in the TS – like furrealz, nobody works in this sector to become rich – I found the people I was networking with to, for the most part, be genuinely good people interested in making a difference. I also felt more at home in my first few months in the sector than I did over the past two years in my old job!

My new(ish) job continues to be the same. Everyone in my work is lovely and I adore the team I’m directly a part of. In fact, part of the reason I’m looking forward to going back is because I’ll get to see them! I won’t lie, the flexibility offered by my current job is also amazing and a big part of why I love it, but for the most part it’s working in the TS itself and the sheer amount of job satisfaction that comes with it. I don’t think I could go back to working in another sector now, unless I was a huuuuuge fan of the company I was working for.

My goal is to end up in animal welfare or wildlife conservation as those are things I’m seriously passionate about, to contribute to making a difference in either of those fields would be a dream come true for me – so that’s what I’m working towards.

Do any of you work in the third sector, for a charity or community organisation?
Could you ever go back to something else…? Let me know your thoughts, as ever 🙂

Til next time,

D x
